Artist Tip Of The Month

When is a Painting Finished?

That is one of the hardest things to know, at what point is a painting finished. The impulse is to keep adding detail long after we should have stopped. More paintings are lost at this finishing stage than at any other time. Every artist should be two artists, one to do the painting; the other to hit the painter on the head and tell him to stop. When you get to the point of having to decide if the painting is finished or not, ask yourself this question. What does the painting need? Not, what else can I do but what does it need. If you answer this question honestly, you will know when to stop painting without being hit on the head.
